Sheesham, also called rosewood, is the most trusted wood in Chiniot furniture because it is strong, durable and beautiful. But the word “Sheesham” is sometimes used loosely. Before you buy a Chinioti bed set, sofa set or dining table, use these simple checks to tell genuine solid Sheesham from cheaper material.
1. Look at the Grain
Real Sheesham has a natural, flowing grain with a mix of dark brown heartwood and lighter streaks. No two pieces look exactly the same. A very uniform, printed-looking pattern that repeats can mean a laminate or veneer.
2. Check the Weight
Sheesham is a dense hardwood, so solid pieces feel heavy for their size. A large bed or table that feels surprisingly light may be made from a softer wood or from board.
3. Inspect Edges, Underside and Back
Look at the edges of tabletops, the underside of chairs and the back of cupboards. Solid wood shows continuous grain across the edge. Layered lines, visible board material or a different colour inside suggest veneer over a different core.
4. Study the Joinery
Traditional Chiniot furniture uses strong wooden joints rather than relying only on nails and glue. Ask how the legs, frame and drawers are joined. Good joinery is one of the biggest reasons Chinioti furniture lasts for generations.
5. Judge the Carving
Hand carving is cut into the wood itself, so it has depth and slight variation. Shallow, repeated, machine-stamped patterns look flat and identical. Run your fingers over the carving: crisp, deep lines are a good sign.
6. Ask About Seasoning and Polish
Wood that is not properly seasoned can crack or warp later. Ask how the wood was seasoned and how many coats of polish are applied. A good polish protects the wood and brings out the grain.
7. Visit and Ask to See Samples
The easiest way to be sure is to see the furniture and wood samples in person. At Comfort Furniture you are welcome to visit our Chiniot showroom and ask to see the wood, joinery and carving of any piece before you order.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Sheesham the same as rosewood?
Sheesham is commonly sold as rosewood, and in Pakistan the two names are used for the same hardwood used in Chinioti furniture.
Does genuine Sheesham furniture crack?
Properly seasoned solid Sheesham is stable. Cracks and warping usually come from wood that was not seasoned well or from keeping furniture in very damp conditions.
Can I repolish Sheesham furniture later?
Yes. Solid Sheesham can be sanded and repolished, which is one reason it lasts for generations.
